HomeRise and Mercy Housing California worked with David Baker Architects to develop Drs. Julian & Raye Richardson Apartments, a permanent supportive housing building for extremely low income, chronically homeless individuals. The building is named in honor of the founders of Marcus Books, Drs. Julian & Raye Richardson. Richardson Apartments opened its doors to tenants in September 2011.

THE BUILDING

Richardson Apartments includes 120 residential studio units, as well as approximately 3,000 square feet of commercial space and approximately 7,500 square feet of common area and program space, including a courtyard and rooftop garden. Construction began in February 2010 and opened in September 2011. UCSF’s Citywide Case Management program is the tenant services provider at Richardson Apartments. Citywide, in partnership with the San Francisco Department of Public Health, offers direct behavioral health services to support residents in maintaining housing stability. They also provide linkages to ongoing services with outside providers as well as preventive medical and psychiatric care.

DRS. JULIAN & RAYE RICHARDSON

Together Drs. Julian & Raye Richardson opened Marcus Books in 1960, the oldest black bookstore in the country. Far more than a bookstore, Marcus Books has served as a community institution and a center of critical discussion on black diaspora history, culture, and politics.
