Maria’s STORY

Before arriving at HomeRise, Maria’s life was shaped by uncertainty. She had been couch surfing and staying in a youth shelter, facing unstable housing due to family struggles.

Maria found out about HomeRise through an Access Point and was quickly connected to the 5th Street Apartments—a supportive housing site in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood dedicated to Transitional Aged Youth (TAY), ages 18 to 25, many of whom have aged out of foster care. The application process was smooth, and before long, Maria had a place to call home.

At 5th Street, Maria not only found a stable roof over her head—something she’s incredibly proud of—but also a strong support system, with staff offering consistent emotional support and practical assistance as she works toward her goals.

Maria continues to work toward her long-term goal of moving into traditional housing, building on the stability and confidence she’s gained through her time at HomeRise. Her message to others navigating similar challenges is clear: “Everything may feel hard right now,” she says, “but when there’s a will, there’s a way to accomplish anything.”
