San Cristina building exterior

HomeRise acquired the San Cristina in 1991 and began rehabilitating the beginning in 1992. HomeRise worked with Asian Neighborhood Design to redevelop this historic building. When the San Cristina opened to tenants in 1994 it became HomeRise’s second building in its permanent, supportive housing portfolio.

THE BUILDING

The San Cristina is a four-story building originally built in 1913 and is now home to 58 single adults. The building features a brightly painted community room, offices for support services, and a fountain and mural on the first floor. The building also has 3 commercial spaces along Market Street. The building is recognized for its unique architectural style and historic value to the City. Prior to being renovated and opened to HomeRise tenants, the San Cristina was used to film portions of the movie “Interview with a Vampire.”

AWARDS

2022 California Housing Accelerator Award

HomeRise’s rehabilitation of the San Cristina is as one of just 27 projects statewide to receive the California Housing Accelerator Award which provides funding to accelerate critical, construction-ready affordable housing projects. The $24M in Accelerator funding awarded to HomeRise is evidence that the San Cristina’s rehabilitation is a central part of Governor Newsom and the Department of Housing and Community Development’s comprehensive strategy to address homelessness and housing affordability and to move quickly to provide safe, affordable homes for the state’s lowest-income households. Construction on the San Cristina will begin in Summer 2022.
